Willie McCovey Reflects on Jackie Robinson's Legacy

16 April 2017, 02:25 | Nichole Osborne

On the 70th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's debut, here are five things to know and celebrate. "I thought it'd be tight".

Jackie Robinson was a father, a husband, a baseball player, a civil rights leader and a role model.

Yankees DH Matt Holliday is playing against the Cardinals this weekend for the first time since ending his eight-year run with St. Louis.

Larger than life, Robinson was and still is now, the Dodgers prepared to unveil a statue of a 5-foot-11 ballplayer sculpted into a figure who, if standing upright, would measure 8 feet tall. Major League Baseball took notice years ago and invested millions of dollars in youth programs, and The Jackie Robinson Foundation also recognized the need. According to USA Today, the timing of the statue's debut couldn't be more imperative.

A statue showing Jackie Robinson stealing home is installed near the reserve level entrances at Dodger Stadium. Now 94, widow Rachel Robinson is traveling from the East Coast to attend the unveiling along with daughter Sharon and son David. "I was born two years after", Baker recalled.

In 2004, the Major League Baseball chose to honor Robinson's memory by celebrating Jackie Robinson Day.

Cadet's work is so impressive that this statue actually speaks.

Needless to say, Robinson's legacy on Saturday was getting its proper respect all around baseball.

It was Campanis' stumbling interview on ABC's "Nightline" with Ted Koppel in 1987 that laid bare baseball's patronizing attitude toward blacks and forced the sport to begin taking the concept of equal opportunity more seriously. Campanis also tutored Robinson on how to protect himself when opposing players tried to spike him, which happened more often because he was black.
