MOTHER HELP Shannon Schwander speaking out about the need for more funding for postnatal depression

"Children's Mental Health Matters" -that's the underlying mantra surrounding mental health awareness during the month of May. Engaging people in conversations about mental illness is important at every stage of recovery.

This week, Nunavut's Department of Health also encouraged Nunavummiut to take time to learn, talk and connect with friends, family and elders about mental health and wellness.

There is new evidence that the Mental Health system is under increasing strain with waiting times for young people to be seen by mental health and addiction services lengthening says Labour's Health spokesperson David Clark. "Records are never shared without the consent of a student, and mental health issues are not arbitrarily discussed". We will also use this opportunity to get together and show what we are doing to promote mental health.

But the ideal situation for that is "to ensure unimpeded access to mental health services, through adequate funding and parity".

People experience symptoms of mental illnesses differently-and some engage in potentially unsafe or risky behaviors to avoid or cover up symptoms of a potential mental health problem.

The easiest and quickest way to determine if you are experiencing conditions of a mental health condition is to take a mental health screening.

The month of May is used to help people understand how common it is. Beverages and light refreshments will be served.

Individuals seeking help for mental illness should call the Behavioral Health Division at 414-257-7665 to be connected to resources.

Under the right circumstances, most mental health issues are manageable. To schedule an interview with a BHD expert, contact Katy Glodosky at 414-323-6362 or katy.glodosky (at) milwaukeecountywi (dot) gov.

Announcing the government's new approach to dealing with that demand, Jonathan Coleman on Thursday said new funding for mental health and addiction services would be included in this year's budget as part of a $321 million social investment package unveiled this week. These projects include creating a new province-wide publicly funded psychotherapy program for people living with anxiety and depression, expanding access to existing psychotherapy programs and supporting integrated service hubs to provide one-stop, walk-in mental health services for youth and students.
