Jose Mourinho confirms Manchester United are giving up on the Premier League

09 May 2017, 07:46 | Deanna Wagner

After nearly 13 years, Arsene Wenger finally got the better of Jose Mourinho in the Premier League after Arsenal beat Manchester United 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

Granit Xhaka and Danny Welbeck both scored within minutes of each other in the second half at the Emirates to hand Mourinho's side a rare defeat.

"It was a game that was clearly a nuisance for him, sandwiched between the two legs of United's Europa League semi-final against Celta Vigo that he has made it obvious is his priority".

"We have a really important chance to play Champions League through the Europa League but in the Premier League anything can happen. We must play Thursday (against Celta Vigo) and then we go again against Tottenham, but we can not go with everything against Tottenham", he said. We knew we had to win, we played a good game and deserved it too.

Mourinho said: "I think he did an wonderful job and I think Alexis Sanchez knows his name because the kid played very well". "It doesn't make a difference for me if you play with three at the back or four", the Swiss said. "The first goal was quite lucky and the second goal was a great goal".

"Mourinho has only signed four players for Manchester United, once he's signed eight to 10 and he is a year further forward I'd be asking the question then if he's still playing a back six". "I'm happy for them".

"Arsene Wenger is not a small manager, he's a big manager, to have that record of winning so many matches is not normal".

Neville thinks seeing Mourinho smiling and laughing during post-match interviews proved his focus was always elsewhere as he discussed the decline in importance of the Arsenal v United fixture, once the biggest game in English football.

The win also takes Arsenal within two points of fifth-placed United, who stay four points behind Manchester City having played the same number of games as their local rivals.

"Mathematically, it is still possible, but now, we need some help from the teams around us", he said.

Now Mourinho insists the path to the top-four is closed. "We couldn't afford to lose". They had a couple of chances in the first half but so did we and ours were the big chances.
