Coming off antidepressants is really hard- here's one tired mother's journey

"We're excited to be part of an effort that seeks to normalize discussion of mental health in the workplace", said Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg, who founded the Steinberg Institute with the goal of making mental health care a public policy priority in the U.S. The seriousness and the costliness of the issue demand year-round attention. The barometer of any nation is the health and happiness of its people. Everyone knows a little bit about mental health issues. There are effective treatments and supports for all mental illnesses. For the persistently mentally ill population, extended group sessions (partial hospitalization) are provided at each site, and case managers travel into the community to work with some clients in their own home environments.

Republicans insist their plan would save money for the federal government, but their inattention to mental health reminds us of the proverb about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure. Together, these efforts address the vast societal and business costs of mental health conditions, which are projected to drain $16 trillion in economic output by 2030.

The research, conducted among 2,000 van owners and operators, found that more than half of the van drivers with poor mental health said that increased time pressures (52 per cent) and increased workload (50 per cent) are factors affecting their mental health, with one in three believing that job uncertainty is contributing to their poor mental health and 17 per cent of delivery drivers adding that road congestion is impacting on their state of mind. Rather than taking this information as evidence that mental health is an area in which money can be saved and funding can be slashed, it should serve to reinforce the importance of adequate spending for treatment.

It's important to remember that mental health is essential to everyone's overall health. A study from the World Health Organization estimates that the cost of mental health treatment is outweighed fourfold in terms of increased production and improved physical health.

The topic of mental health was recently brought into focus by Prince Harry's admittal he suffered from mental health issues around the death of his mother. We need to speak up early and educate people about risky behavior and its connection to mental illness-and do so in a compassionate, judgement-free way. Mental Health Month works not just because it is about what others can do for us, but what we can do for ourselves. Many people are quick to shun or to blame those who afflicted, rather than recognizing the need for compassion.
