Police chief, 2 nursing home employees killed; gunman dead

Thorp said he assumes [Chief] Disario had engaged the suspect. Search warrants have been obtained for his home as well as two vehicles.

Authorities say the gunman also was found dead Friday. As deputies cleared the building, residents and employees were found barricaded in several places, Thorp said.

Authorities did not immediately identify the officer or share the conditions of the other victims. But a new co-worker quickly returned to the basement, telling them someone was shooting upstairs.

Kathy Rogers, who owns The Depot Thrift Shop in downtown Kirkersville, said she heard multiple gunshots Friday morning.

Bill Sims said he rushed over from work, and family members of the nursing home employees were waiting outside while the workers were interviewed by police.

"We've lost a police officer".

Disario was a father of six children and was expecting a seventh, said Thorp, who added that he did not know the chief.

Thorp said approximately 23 residents were in the building when the bullets began flying. The facility is secure, and it's unclear how the gunman got in, he said.

"This is a bad tragedy for our community", Thorp said.

"They cater to the forgotten members of society - folks that have, in addition to physical health care needs, behavioral health issues", Peter Van Runkle, executive director of the Ohio Health Care Association, a nursing home industry group, told the newspaper.

Gunfire only lasted for a matter of minutes just before 8 a.m. A crisis team was on the scene to help assist those officers, as well as the residents in the facility and other employees.

The state Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the probe into what happened.

The scene is about five miles west of Hebron in Licking County at Pine Kirk Care Center, a nursing home. Scanner traffic reports the active shooter has been "neutralized".

Two law enforcement sources tell 10TV the gunman is down.

The officer who was shot later died from their injuries at a nearby hospital, according to the Newark Advocate.

Police are also interviewing witnesses from inside the nursing home.

" 'I heard the first shot. Then I walked out on the porch and about that time the squad and police were everywhere", Milam said.

Kirkersville Elementary was placed on lockdown, and its students transported to the town's middle school.
