March at India Gate over killing of Ummer Fayaz

Defence authorities in Delhi had yesterday identified six militants belonging to Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), saying they were involved in the abduction and killing of the 22-year-old Army officer in Shopian district of Kashmir. "He will be a role modal for many Kashmiri boys willing to join the Army", he said. Witnesses said the army officer was taken away while he was sitting with the bride, even as more militants waited outside the house.

"There is no such advisory but yes, we have said that anybody (local army man) who is coming into the areas (to visit their homes), he should inform the nearest army camp so that we can provide security to him", he said. "Though we have identified the militants, their names can not be revealed immediately", he said.

Lieutenant General (Retired) VK Chaturvedi who participated in the event said the country has lost a role model.

On Saturday evening, hundreds of people gathered at India Gate to hold a candle light march to mourn the death of Lieutenant Ummer Fayaz, according to media reports.

Cries of "Bharat mata ki jai" rented the air along with others condemning Pakistan and militant groups in the Valley.

As per a statement to news agency CNS, Hizbul Mujahideen Chief, Syed Salahuddin while addressing a special meeting said that India has planned to launch terrorist organization ISIS to sabotage the ongoing Kashmir Freedom Struggle.

The alumni association of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, where Fayaz studied before joining the Pune-based National Defence Academy, were among the marchers, along with members of the 124 Infantry Battalion of the Territorial Army. "I am sure that the summer will be peaceful", he added.

The Rajputana Rifles officer, who was commissioned into the army only in December 2016, was abducted from his on Tuesday and his body was found the next day in Kashmir's Shopian. He made a decision to join the National Defence Academy (NDA) four years ago.

His first leave home, however turned out to be his last.

Hailing from Kulgam district, Fayaz was in the Infantry and was posted in Akhnoor area in Jammu.
