2 grisly gang rapes show India struggling on women's safety

2 gang rapes show India struggling on women's safety

The girl's pregnancy was detected after the mother, who works as a domestic help, was alerted by one of her employers about the girl's swollen stomach.

Almost 40,000 rape cases are reported every year in India, but the real number is thought to be much higher, with victims wary of how their complaints will be dealt with or the social stigma attached to sex crimes. New Delhi alone registered 2199 rape cases in 2015, an average of six a day.

The two crimes are reminiscent of the 2012 fatal gang rape of a woman in New Delhi that spurred widespread protests.

The problem, Sangwan said, is that there are few cases that actually make it to trial and conviction.

But those numbers are still considered only a fraction of the actual rape cases across the socially conservative country. The victim had been brutally raped and body bore several injury marks. "I want him to be released and my daughter's child to be aborted", the mother said.

"The question of women's safety is not a priority for the police", Sangwan said.

A minor girl from Rohtak has written to the police alleging rape and blackmail by two persons at gunpoint.

Just a few days later, a 22-year-old woman from Sikkim was allegedly raped by three men in a moving auto in Gurgaon and thrown out on a road in Delhi.

The child has said she was repeatedly raped by her stepfather, who has since been arrested. Police are searching for suspects.

"Now it is for the courts to decide", Nain told AFP.

Rohtak hit the headlines last week when a 23-year-old was abducted, raped and killed by her ex-boyfriend. That case had wended its way through India's backlogged court system for years since the three men raped and murdered the computer software professional in 2009.
