Veteran actress Reema Lagoo dies at 59

Reema Lagoo, one of the most iconic characters in the Bollywood movies and known for playing the role of mother has passed away due to cardiac arrest quoted IANS.

Reema, who was also a popular television personality, was last seen in Star Plus's show Naamkaran.

In Marathi, she gave notable stage performances in "Ghar Tighanche Have", "Chal Aatap Lavkar", "Jhale Mokle Aakash", "To Ek Kshann", "Purush Buland" and "Vitho Rakhumai", etc.


We dug out a video interview of her of 2009 where Reema was told that Salman chose her as his favourite on-screen mother. She soon started acting in Hindi and Marathi film. Here, she played the character of Shah Rukh Khan's mother who supports and strengthens him during his last few days. Her other popular films were Hum Apke Hain Kaun, Hum Saath Saath Hain and Kal Ho Naa Ho. Actors Rishi Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Nimrat Kaur and Riteish Deshmukh, and filmmakers Kunal Kohli and Madhur Bhandarkar condoled Reema Lagoo's death.

Also speaking to PTI, Lagoo's son-in-law Vinay Waikul said, "She was complaining of chest pain so we took her to the hospital around 1 AM". She was born to a Marathi actress in 1958. She also appeared in many TV serials. The daily soap which was inspired by the Mahesh Bhatt directed 1998 movie Zakhm saw Reema Lagoo in an influential role of the antagonist, Dayavanti Mehta. Reema Lagoo won four Filmfare awards in the supporting actress category. She is survived by daughter Mrunmayee, a theatre actress and director.
