Chinese state media says US should take some blame for cyber attack

Ransomware attack had 'nearly zero' impact in India: Minister

The ransomware attack will force hundreds of thousands of users of older versions of the Windows operating system to upgrade to recent versions such as Windows 10 Pro - which now retails on the Windows store for a sweet Rs 14,999.

Microsoft Responds on WannaCry Ransomware Attack: Microsoft systems which are under threat after WannaCry Ransomware attack which occurred last Friday.

"This attack provides yet another example of why the stockpiling of vulnerabilities by governments is such a problem", the company said in a blogpost. His point to governments is this: report vulnerabilities to vendors rather than exploit them.

This reality was once again in the forefront over the weekend, as a massive ransomware virus known as WannaCry spread across the globe and captured headlines.

Meanwhile, none of the major banks, or the Reserve Bank of India, reported any anomaly, suggesting that the latest cyber-attack had minimal impact on the country's financial system.

Clinging on to obsolete operating systems is not just limited to banks as many enterprises and institutions have also been using older versions of Windows. And Washington had no trustworthy proofs to sustain prohibitions on Chinese tech companies in the United States of America after the WannaCry ransomware attack. If you are running Windows 10, your computer won't be affected. The attack spread automatically once on the NHS network, locking up systems and making their files inaccessible - while demanding a $300 per computer ransom to unlock the systems. The NCSC [National Cyber Security Centre] is working with NHS Digital and other critical sectors to help them prepare for these sort of attacks, and guidance has been available on this and other cyber security issues.

Some experts also believe that a widespread use of bootleg software in India might have forced companies to cover up their losses as they can not report the same due to licensing issues.

According to the BSA Global Software Survey, 58 percent of the software tools used in India in 2015 was pirated, with a commercial value of $2.68 billion.

The WannaCry campaign has claimed 200,000 victims across 150 countries worldwide so far and it has targeted private companies and public organizations and has actually endangered the lives of people. The hackers demanded payment in Bitcoin to release the encrypted files. "We have seen earlier that black hats would mainly attack and deface Indian websites but now the objective is mainly money".
