LeBron James breaks Michael Jordan's playoff scoring record

28 May 2017, 02:04 | Susie Olson

But James' jump in playoff scoring has rekindled the conversation over which player is better, James or Jordan.

James is nearing the end of his 14th season in the National Basketball Association, has won the MVP Award four times, is sitting on three National Basketball Association titles and has never won a scoring title.

But it all evaporated.

The Cavaliers star came into the game needing 28 points for the record and hit a 3-pointer in the third quarter against the Celtics to break it.

For James, the Finals are an annual rite.

The 2016 champion Cavs will battle the 2015 champion Warriors for the third straight year.

Cleveland bullied a hapless Celtics in today's Game 5 of their Eastern Conference Championship clash, erasing any doubt as to who the big swinging dick was by the end of the first quarter in which the Cavs dropped an eye-watering 43 points on the Massachusetts Green Men. But then he added this: "OK, maybe a slight preference for Cleveland". "We feel like we should be here, and we feel like we should be a championship-contending team". But they displayed their superiority over the final two games to wrap up the series.

And they're doing this without their head coach. That means Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love get a slew of open looks, but it also means deferring for guys who've never previously been No. 2 or 3 on their teams.

Kerr is still involved, albeit donning sweatpants.

For other franchises, the NBA's Final Four is a destination.

The Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook installed Golden State as a minus-260 favorite, with Cleveland at plus-220, meaning a $100 bet on the Warriors would win $38.46 and the same bet on the Cavaliers would win $220, according to ESPN. He is eligible for free agency after next season.

On July 4, with a 351-word post on The Players' Tribune, Durant announced he was joining the Warriors.

"I'm just proud of the work we've put in from the beginning of the season", Durant said following the sweep of the Spurs. We'll go from there.

Can LeBron and the Cavs do it again?

Howe set a record with 12 points in the round and Lindsay scored four goals in a Game 2 win. "LeBron James" team will be the underdog.

The loss snapped Cleveland's 10-game winning streak in this postseason and a 13-game run dating to Game 4 of last year's Finals.

Can the Cavs do it again? It's not every day that someone goes to his seventh consecutive NBA Finals. So it makes it even more hard.

James started Game 5 against the Celtics just 27 points from tying Michael Jordan as the all-time National Basketball Association leading scorer in playoff history after scoring 34 points in Game 4 on Tuesday night. After torching the Celtics for 35, James now sits at 5,995 postseason career points.

"It has nothing to do with passing the rings, passing the points, passing MVPs", James said.

Heck, it would have been nice for them to at least own a lead in one of their home games, if even for just a minute or two.

He continued, "So I think that helped shape my game. That's all I've got to say about my performance".

Let the hype, and the waiting, begin: Game 1 isn't until Thursday.

As James' detractors - and Jordan truthers - are wont to do, there will be an attempt to discredit this feat.
