Trump lashes out at leaks, considers staff upheaval

01 June 2017, 12:49 | Bernice Figueroa

Princeling in Chief Jared Kushner is once again at the center of a crisis engulfing the White House, with reports indicating the President's son-in-law is under investigation for allegedly requesting a secure channel for the campaign to speak to Russian authorities.

Jason Greenblatt, the White House adviser on global negotiations, told the Times that Kushner has helped shape policy options on the topic of the Middle East. Greenblatt said that Kushner deserved much of the credit for Trump's trip last week to the Middle East.

On Sunday, the interview programs were dominated by allegations, first published Friday by the Post, that Kushner, at a December 2016 meeting with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, proposed the establishment of a back channel for communications between Russian military officials and the Trump transition team. But he said on "Fox News Sunday" that "any channel of communications back or otherwise with a country like Russian Federation is a good thing".

"Whenever you see the words "sources say" in the fake news media, and they don't mention names it is very possible that those sources don't exsist but are made up by fake news writers".

The Democratic Party and elements within the intelligence apparatus seized on the press reports to escalate their anti-Russian campaign and suggest that Kushner, if not Trump himself, had committed treason.

The allegations came after Mr Kushner was said to be under scrutiny as part of the Federal Bureau of Investigation inquiry into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Current and former USA officials said Mr. Kushner's activities, like those of many others around Mr. Trump, are under scrutiny as part of the investigation. #FakeNews is the enemy! The Washington Post story is based on "anonymous sources" and the White House has offered no comment on the story, nor has Flynn's legal team or the Russian Embassy. "And the other pattern we have is just a continuous drumbeat of inappropriate contacts with the Russians".

The disclosure of the back channel has put the White House on the defensive.

"You have to ask, well, who are they hiding the conversations from?"

"I do think there ought to be a review of his security clearance to find out whether he was truthful, whether he was candid", Schiff said. Senator Bob Corker, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, noted that Mr Kushner has been willing to answer questions.

"You've got the ambassador to Russian Federation reporting back to Moscow on an open channel", Graham said.

Kushner was joined by Michael Flynn, the retired general who would resign as Trump's national security adviser after reports that he secretly spoke with Kislyak about sanctions.

The White House should thus be settling in for a long siege. He said there was also a big question as to what role Mr Kushner should have. "We're just not going to", National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn told reporters in a briefing.

Kushner boasts an enormous portfolio of domestic and worldwide responsibilities, underscoring his importance as Trump's chief adviser despite having no experience in politics before the 2016 White House race. "The whole story line is suspicious".
