British armed police rushed to three incidents in central London on Saturday after a van ploughed into pedestrians on London Bridge and reports of multiple stabbings in the nearby Borough Market area.

Officers responded around 10 p.m. local time to reports of a vehicle collision involving pedestrians on the London Bridge, police said.

Shortly after there were reported stabbings at nearby Borough Market and police say officers were sent to the area and shots were fired. There are also reports of "rapid" gunfire.

Tony Murphy, who has a flat opposite Southwark Bridge, said he heard "rapid gunfire".

British Transport Police says there are multiple casualties.

"He swerved right round me and then hit about five or six people".

"Then three men got out with long blades, 12 inches long and went randomly along Borough High Street stabbing people at random". He said they saw a metal chair being thrown towards the man.

Follow up reports also told of authorities London bridge in lock down with the surrounding area closed with bus routes being diverted, as armed police and a bomb squad attend the scene and boats search the Thames for bodies - amid reports that people were pushed into the water.

Officers were seen dragging startled diners and revellers out of restaurants and bars and telling them to run.

On Saturday evening police responded to the scene at London Bridge after a vehicle plowed into pedestrians. The possible attacker was shown on the ground outside the Wheatsheaf pub in Borough Market near London Bridge.

British Transport Police has asked people to avoid the area as it deals with the situation.

The incidents come nine days after a suicide bomber with apparent ties to terror groups killed 22 people and injured scores of others outside an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England.

One witness wrote on Twitter: "Passerby says 15-20 people have been run over". In March, four people were killed in London after Khalid Masood rammed his auto into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge before fatally stabbing a policeman outside the Houses of Parliament.

Labor senator Sam Dastyari said on social media he was having dinner near the bridge and was evacuated past the scene by police after they placed the restaurant in lockdown.

Another witness, Will Heaven, said he saw people who appeared to have been hit, and one being put into an ambulance.
