The Trump Jerusalem Waiver

04 June 2017, 04:49 | Cynthia Sparks

The order the president signed waives an edict - the Jerusalem Embassy Act - passed by Congress and signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1995, requiring that the embassy be relocated to Jerusalem.

Trump faced a deadline of Thursday to renew the waiver or to possibly see the U.S. Department of State lose half of its funding for overseas facilities if the Embassy was not moved to Jerusalem.

In a statement, the White House explained that Trump's waiver meant just a temporary delay, rather than an all-out abandonment of his campaign province to move the American Embassy in Israel.

"We are ready to to start the consultation process with the USA administration", Zomlot said.

"As much as he wanted the move to occur", former U.S. Ambassador Dan Shapiro wrote on Twitter, "he didn't want it forced when it could disrupt the overriding strategic goal of completing successful negotiations [with] the Palestinians".

United States officials asserted that the president made a decision to postpone relocating the embassy. As a result, the US government does not recognize Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel. Israel considers all of the city its indivisible capital.

It may be a little hard to defend this change for Trump, who openly criticized past presidents of both parties for waivers and campaigned on being a non-politician who keeps his promises.

Palestinian leaders are cheering the move.

"As he has repeatedly stated, his intention to move the embassy. Israel's stewardship of Jerusalem has been tremendous and has included guaranteeing religious freedom for Christians and Muslims as well as Jews - something that was nonexistent during the city's Arab occupation", DeSantis declared in a statement issued by his office. Another six months isn't going to make or break our relationship with Israel; apparently neither will 22 years of waivers with the same statement attached every time.

"We know that peace is possible if we put aside the pain and disagreements of the past and commit together to finally resolving this crisis", he said.

The decision is a blow to Israeli hard-liners and their American backers who have long urged the United States and others to build their embassies in Jerusalem.

One mainly deals with diplomacy with Palestinians, while another building issues visas to people who live in Jerusalem and Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.

President Donald Trump postponed moving the USA embassy in Israel to Jerusalem on Thursday, avoiding a provocative step as he tries to revive the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of an independent state.
