McCarthy's lawyer argues Bond killed the girl, who was initially dubbed "Baby Doe" after a composite image of her likeness was shared by millions on social media as authorities tried to identify her.
Bond returns to the witness stand this morning, after which, time allowing, jurors will hear for the first time from 2-year-old Bella's father, Joseph Amoroso. Shapiro asked Rachelle Bond at one point.
It was then, Bond allegedly told McCarthy that, "You killed my kid". He claims that when he stopped seeing Bella, Rachelle Bond told him the little girl was taken away by child services officials, just as her other two children had.
Under cross-examination Tuesday, Bond reiterated that she didn't speak up about her daughter's death because she was afraid of McCarthy.
The defense is trying to undermine Bond's testimony by focusing on how she has changed the account of how her daughter Bella died.
"But it's the truth, I was scared", Bond said. While she was questioned by prosecutor David Deakin on Friday and early Monday, neither she nor Deakin mentioned the refrigerator. She previously pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact for helping dispose of her daughter's body. As a result, she could walk free on time served at the end of the trial. Rachelle Bond testified last week that McCarthy used the auto to drive the girl's body to nearby water, weighted it down inside a garbage bag and a duffel bag, and threw it into the water.
She also said McCarthy injected her with heroin repeatedly.
On Friday, Bond told jurors that McCarthy punched her daughter in the abdomen so hard that she bounced off a bed.
She described the days following Bella's death as being filled with continued drug use, blackouts, and threats from McCarthy. Shapiro subjected the 41-year-old Rachelle Bond to an intense cross examination.
During opening statements, Jonathan Shapiro, McCarthy's defense attorney, said it was Bella's mother who believed children could be possessed by demons - not McCarthy.
