WWDC '17: First look at Apple's new iMac Pro

08 June 2017, 01:36 | Gerardo Harmon

The company recently updated the Mac Pro with slightly newer processors, but aside from that minor upgrade, its high-end systems haven't been refreshed since 2013.

Also anticipated to be unveiled at WWDC 2017 include a refreshed MacBook lineup, ranging from the MacBook and the MacBook Pro to the MacBook Air. They also get a pair of USB-C ports, while retaining legacy ports - no repeat of the MacBook Pro dongle debacle. The 13-inch version starts at $1,299, the same price as the 2015 MacBook.

Apple also says the SSD storage is 50 percent faster. The Most Advanced Graphics Ever in a Mac iMac Pro comes with the new Radeon Pro Vega GPU, the most advanced graphics ever in a Mac. The base model of the iMac will have the Intel Iris Plus Graphics that is claimed to be 80% faster than the previous generation GPU. Weighing just two pounds and measuring 13.1mm thin, MacBook is our thinnest and lightest notebook for all-day, on-the-go computing. Apple's MacBook Pro with 13-inch display will start at Rs 109,900 with Intel Core i5 processor, which is clocked at 2.3GHz and this is a dual-core one.

To handle all of that, users will be able to order the iMac Pro with as much as 128 GB of memory, and an all-flash storage drive of up to 4 TB to help content creators manipulate and store large 4K and HD projects. The Radeon Pro 500 series makes use of the critically-acclaimed "Polaris" GPU architecture, delivering the flawless balance of performance and operating efficiency that makes them ideal for All-In-Ones.

At WWDC 2017, Apple launched a whole bunch of stuff, including a new version of MacOS (nicknamed High Sierra), loads of new Apple Watch features and of course some iOS 11 loveliness.

"We're thrilled to give developers and customers a sneak peek at iMac Pro".

The iMac Pro will be a niche machine, but the HomePod (shouldn't it have been Siri Speaker?) is definitely mass-market and should've been ready by now and not December.

Apple was expected to put an Intel Xeon chip inside its all-in-one, but we didn't think the iMac Pro would come with an up to 18-core processor.

Prices are sticking at US$1,099 for the entry level 21.5-inch iMac, while the top-end 27-inch 5K model stays at $1,799. It can also be configured to use the Radeon Pro Vega 64 graphics processor with 16GB of HBM2 memory.

"Today iMac gets a huge graphics performance increase, faster CPU performance, Thunderbolt 3 and a brighter Retina display with support for 1 billion colors".

There's a bunch of other specs that Apple showed off onstage, but all you need to know is that this monster will be capable of delivering up to 22 teraflops of half precision computation - powerful enough for things like real-time 3D rendering, immersive VR, and machine learning development.

Finally, the iMac Pro features 10 gigabit Ethernet, the first time ever on a Mac.
