Guentzel's goal lifts Penguins by Predators 5-3 in Game 1

Pittsburgh Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin left celebrates his goal against the Nashville Predators with teammates during the first period in Game 1 of the NHL hockey Stanley Cup Final Monday

The Pittsburgh Penguins rarely tested the hottest goaltender in the playoffs in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final against Nashville.

Nashville scored on only one of its 38 shots at Penguins goalie Matt Murray, getting the first goal of the game when Pontus Aberg danced around Pittsburgh defenseman Olli Maatta and patiently waited before lifting a forehand into the net at 12:57 of the first period.

The Pittsburgh Penguins exploded for three goals in the opening 3:28 of the third period to down the Nashville Predators 4-1 in Game 2 to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Stanley Cup Final.

The Penguins vowed to put more pressure on Rinne than they managed in their 5-3 victory in Game 1, a win they managed despite going 37 minutes without throwing a single puck Rinne's way and none in the second period, the first time that's happened since the National Hockey League started tracking shots in 1957. You may remember the first, it won game five for the Predators in Anaheim.

Guentzel, who scored the victor in Game 1, now has the second-highest goal total ever recorded by a rookie in one playoff season.

Guentzel, at the right post, took two whacks at a rebound of a Conor Sheary shot. "So we're going back home and we're going to win the next game and we'll see what happens after there".

Jake Guentzel once again had the game victor for the Penguins, this time just 10 seconds into the third period.

P.K. Subban picked up his first career postseason fighting major on Wednesday night after a tussle with Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin in the third period.

All of that seems to have worked and Guentzel is not only a huge reason the Penguins are up 2-0 in the series, but he is also starting to insert himself into the Conn Smythe discussion. I don't think it's Xs and Os.

Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan is shuffling his lines for Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Predators. "I don't know if you remember but the worst goaltender at the World Cup for Team Finland was Pekka Rinne". He allowed four goals on 11 shots in Game 1 and has allowed 20 goals over his past six games after allowing just 16 over his first 11 playoff games.

The first third period goal set a record for the fastest goal in Penguins playoff history.

At least fans recognized Steve Carlson and his brother as the Hanson brothers from "Slap Shot" fame when they busted into one Hockey 101 lesson. "Even in the second we had chances but couldn't get a goal. Obviously, they're going to be tough to get". For the Penguins to be able to skate out onto the ice in a big game with the confidence of having that kind of calm presence in their net is a huge advantage for them.

Pittsburgh downplayed the notion it was tired, figuring adrenaline and a shot at making history would make up for any lack of jump while playing their 108th game in the last calendar year.

All the guys from "Smashville" have to show for it is their first deficit of the playoffs on a night a fan threw a catfish onto the ice to try and give the Predators a taste of home. The second game for the most part we played well, but this is a winning business and at the end of the day you just have to win.

Catfish tossing has been a tradition of the Predators since 2003, and Metro Nashville police say that no one has been prosectuted since the tradition began.
