United Kingdom police arrest man as part of ongoing London Bridge attack investigation

10 June 2017, 07:04 | Nichole Osborne

London police said late on Tuesday that they feared a French tourist, 45-year-old Xavier Thomas, had been thrown into the River Thames by the attackers' van and drowned.

When she saw the news about the attacks in London on Saturday night, she tried to call him and became anxious when she couldn't reach him.

The Metropolitan Police says the body was found Tuesday downstream from the bridge.

"Formal identification has not yet taken place, however Mr. Thomas' next of kin have been informed of this development", Met Police said in a statement. Thomas' girlfriend was struck and seriously injured by the van.

In addition to the seven people killed, at least 50 others were injured.

The assailants drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge, before descending into the nearby Borough Market where they stabbed people out for the night in the bars and restaurants.

Khuram Shazad Butt, named Monday as one of the three London attackers, was known to Britain's MI5 intelligence service and even featured in a documentary entitled "The Jihadis Next Door".

An Italian website has claimed Moroccan and "British authorities" were tipped off about Zaghba's movements after he was charged and later cleared on global terrorism charges and placed on a "persons at risk" list. After a period living together in Morocco, Zaghba's parents separated and the mother returned to Italy.

Youssef Zaghba, 22, one of three men who carried out Saturday night's atrocity, was able to get into the United Kingdom despite being arrested a year ago on his way to Syria where he planned to fight for Isis.

Scotland Yard said seven women and five men aged between 19 and 60 have been arrested under the Terrorism Act.

Police shot and killed all three.

Detectives from London police's counterterrorism command raided properties in east London on Thursday, detaining three people on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism offenses.

Boris Johnson, Britain's foreign secretary, said that the police and security services will have to explain why Butt was not stopped.

But he appeared in a Channel 4 documentary entitled "The Jihadis Next Door" about British extremists that was broadcast past year, according to local media.

Le Drian said a third French citizen remained missing following the attack.

The news report quoted Italian media outlets as saying that the airport police had suspected he was headed to Syria from Istanbul in Turkey, and had warned several intelligence agencies, including those of the British, about his movements.

A 27-year-old was detained on terrorism charges while the second, 33, was arrested on drugs charges.
