GETTYReading boss Jaap Stam could replace Garry Monk at Leeds United

Reading, who were last in the Premier League in the 2012/13 season, are now hoping to thwart any potential suitors with the club rumoured to have offered a new two-year contract to the Dutchman.

Reading FC boss Jaap Stam has become the latest manager to distance himself from taking on the vacant Leeds United job, according to his agent.

Monk spoke of his determination to progress saying, "I wanted to find a club that aligned with my ambition and Middlesbrough is definitely that club".

Stam has been linked with the Leeds United job in recent days, after Garry Monk's resignation.

"I've worked under pressure throughout my career".

The 38-year-old was expected to extend his stay with the Yorkshire club, but talks with owner Andrea Radrizzani broke down after the Italian completed his full takeover.

Monk has yet to finalise his backroom staff or decide the future of former head coach Steve Agnew and won't meet his players until they report back for pre-season training later this month.

Gibson has spoken of his desire to "smash the league" next season and "go up as champions" from the Championship.

"I have signed for three years but ideally, I want promotion at the first attempt".

The 67-times capped Netherlands global, who won three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the Champions League title while at Manchester United, took over at the Madejski Stadium in June 2016. "I want to keep our best players and the club is in agreement with that".

The North East side are still resigned to losing their star defender this window after relegation from the Premier League, despite appointing Garry Monk as manager yesterday.
