Citi Bike Rider Struck, Killed By Charter Bus In Chelsea
A man in a suit and tie was killed in what is believed to be New York City's first fatality involving a Citi Bike Monday.
The New York Times has yet another version, saying "he swerved to go around a parked van, struck a bus next to him that was traveling in the same direction, tumbled off the bicycle and fell under the bus's rear tires". Hanegby, from Brooklyn Heights, was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center where he was later pronounced dead.
Police said Hanegby and the 52-year-old charter bus driver were both headed east on 26th Street when they collided.
Citi Bike expressed condolences to Hanegby's family in a statement, and says they'll work to make sure their riders are practicing safe bicycling.
Hanegby's death is the first since the program was set up in May 2013, having lent out bikes for more than 43 million trips. "Together with the City of NY, we wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the rider's family and loved ones on this bad tragedy".
An investment banker riding a Citi Bike was killed Monday after he toppled over while riding beside a bus and was crushed to death under its wheels.
As part of the city's Vision Zero campaign, it is reported that four people were killed on bicycles in NY this year and 903 were injured.
Hanegby grew up in Israel and had been his nation's top-ranked tennis player as a teenager before joining the Israel Defense Forces.
