Apple's new app rules tighten grip on China's tipping

Apple's new app rules tighten grip on China's tipping

Apple takes a 30% cut on every purchase, from the App Store or in-app.

Fixing its subscriptions requires much more than banning some keywords, though.

Lin dug deeper and found several other similar apps making money off the same scam, suggesting a wider disturbing trend, with scam apps regularly showing up in the App Store's top grossing lists. Of course, thanks to iOS sandboxing and other security features, malware isn't a significant issue in Apple's mobile operating system.

"If you want to unlock features of functionality within your app, (by way of example: subscriptions, in-game currencies, game levels, access to premium content, or unlocking a full version), you must use in-app purchase". Lin's piece specifically hones in on an app called Mobile protection:Clean & Security VPN.

This is a welcome change for game developers as navigating to games tab in the previous design required more clicks. If they are not a trustworthy customer, this is a significant risk to take with your data.

Earlier in order to rate some app users were forced to leave the app and visit App store for rating the app which was time-consuming and inconvenient. However, he also notes that at the exorbitant prices the app charged, it would only need around 200 subscribers to get to that amount. Over a year the developer would earn $960,000, of which 30 percent would go to Apple.

While there have always been apps from less reputable developers in the App Store, one developer called attention to just how bad the problem has become in recent months.

We've reached out to Apple for comment on this practice.

Problem is, the way Apple's app subscriptions work, agreeing to a "free" trial can automatically opt you in to an auto-renewing subscription.

The app exposes several problems with the App Store now.

But it also illustrates the risks associated with people who read about VPNs in the mainstream media and sign up for the first thing they see without first doing their research.

Gruber argued that Apple needs to reassess "the effects of allowing developers to buy their way to the top spot in search results".

"These are the exact sort of apps that the App Store review process should be primarily looking to block", Gruber wrote on his Daring Fireball blog in response to Lin's research.
