Darjeeling: GJM indefinite strike continues, heavy security deployed

The Centre has so far refused to hold talks on Kashmir, saying dialogue and attacks can not go hand in hand -which is what Mamata also said today.

"There is a terrorist brain behind this hooliganism". Only a terrorist and not a common man can do this. They (GJM) have connections with underground insurgent groups of the north east.

GJM supporters on Saturday morning held four rallies in Darjeeling hills. He has been admitted to hospital, and is battling for life.

The situation turned worse after the police raided the office of GJM chief Bimal Gurung and recovering cache of arms and ammunition and mobile phones, among others.

The alleged police raid and vandalising of the residence of Tamang at around 3 a.m. triggered massive resistance from GJM supporters. Holding aloft the tricolour, GJM youth members led the rally from Chawk Bazar, the famous lower market area on the Hill cart Road in Darjeeling, and passionately shouted pro-Gorkhaland slogans. They opened fire using.303 bullets. I request the Centre not to encourage them.

In another false alarm, this time raised by the CM no less; Banerjee claimed that protesters were threatening journalists to show certain clips and that some of her "media friends" had been kidnapped.

"The Centre must extend its full cooperation to us".

"Two of our comrades were killed in police firing". After that, the protestors reportedly became violent and threw stones at the police.

"We want to feed the people and I am anxious how we will provide rations to the people in the hills".

Reacting to her statement, 51-year-old Gurung said: "The allegations are baseless, Mamata Banerjee is trying to mislead people". The first incidents of violence were reported from the hills soon after Mamata Banerjee and her Cabinet were about to leave the Raj Bhawan in Darjeeling after their Cabinet meeting there. I am refraining from naming them to maintain secrecy. Do not listen to Bimal Gurung. Hill is your right, protect it.

She said a political party should not work against the spirit and principles of democracy.

"Heads of these development boards have been asked to persuade their people to disassociate from the agitation and violence", the official said, "Once the number of agitators starts dwindling, the protest is bound to subside". Now when the elections are nearing, why are you starting the violence again? A few GJM youths stood in solemn silence around a vehicle in which was placed a picture of one of the protesters who was killed the day before.

Once the supply is dried up, he said, "They will have no other option but to call of the strike and come for negotiation". We can not support hooliganism, vandalism.

"We are not ready for talks with West Bengal government". Two of our supporters have died because of the state government.

Meanwhile in what seemed like the Hill agitation is slowly spreading in the Plains the GJM and associated parties had called a 12-hour bandh in Dooars region on Sunday.
