Furyk reached 10-under 200 with a 67 in the third round at Olympia Fields, giving him a three-shot lead over Stephen Leaney of Australia. "But it isn't a U.S. Open course that I'm familiar with the way it was set up".
Harman was on top at 12 under coming into the day.
"Obviously, I enjoy going low".
"I've got a good plan for this course".
But come on Johnny, don't get too bitter about it.
"The back nine really suits my eye, I don't know why". Additionally, Harman is a left-handed golfer.
"Sometimes you just have to play them (majors) until you get really comfortable".
His closing bogey gave him a 68 and left him tied for second with Thomas and powerhouse Brooks Koepka, among those to fire a four-under round.
Brian Harman plays with a chip on his shoulder. But his chip landed short of the green on a ridge, leaving him a almost impossible putt to hold the green. It was shot at Oakmont when he won, but that was a par 70 course.
"It was a good save, though".
"It was a good save, it was a good bogey", said Fleetwood.
To that point, Fleetwood had five birdies and was minus-5 for the day. "And you can't do anything about what anybody else is doing". But you can't do anything about that stuff. It was never that way in the U.S. Open. "But I played pretty well". At 7,800 yards, it is the longest Open venue ever.
"You could keep knocking it back and forth over that green", said Fleetwood, "staring seven or eight in the face". Some guys are hitting 4-iron into the greens, and having a wedge and a 9-iron. But it was getting dark and I wore colored glasses then. His third round featured six birdies and an eagle (par-five 18th) and two bogeys. If you do that and don't hit a ideal shot you're going to make bogeys - and that's what I did. Felt like I had a good feel for the speed of the greens today, hit a lot of good lag putts.
Thomas' historic round included nine birdies, including three straight to finish the front nine.
For all his good work, the Englishman needed a flawless pitch shot to save his round. Through 11-holes I should and could have been six-under for the day.
Thomas' hand shook slightly as he studied the green, and his putt. I'm confident I'm prepared for whatever happens, good or bad. Fowler is sharing a house this week with Thomas, so he said, "I want to hear some stories". My wife and I will cook dinner, we'll relax.
There was also the score to consider. "If I do something silly low, who knows what might happen". "I was excited to shoot 63. But I had no idea in terms of 9-under being the best in the U.S. Open". Spieth has said that he feels that he is striking the ball well, but that he is trying to get more consistent on and around the greens.
"I could not have hit that three-wood to the last (from 299 yards) any better if I tried, just a little high cut and I was very fortunate for the overnight rain for the ball to stay there".
"And my short game is pretty good. So I'm excited about all those things", Harman told usopen.com.
