Democrats win annual baseball game with special meaning

20 June 2017, 12:10 | Bernice Figueroa

A playground near the baseball field is cordoned off with police tape as the investigation continue at the scene in Alexandria, Va., Thursday, June 15, 2017, the day after House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of La. was shot during during a congressional baseball practice.

"The Congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time." the Medstar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement, adding that Scalise has "improved in the last 24 hours".

"Congressman Steve Scalise sustained a single rifle shot to the left hip". The crowd chanted "USA!"

By far the most emotional moment of the night was when Agent David Bailey took the mound to throw out the first pitch.

DAVIS: There was a question yesterday of whether the game should go on tonight considering the events of the shooting, but members were unanimous that they believe that the game should go on, and that's exactly what Scalise would want to happen.

The gunman, James Hodgkinson from the St Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois, was shot dead by officers in Mr Scalise's security detail.

"To the extent that people think this is just a game, they're wrong", Richmond told reporters Thursday.

Some Republican lawmakers blamed the shooting on vitriolic political rhetoric, particularly rising from the left in the era of Trump.

The Republican team's manager, Rep. Joe Barton, R-Tex., was looking forward to a spirited game Thursday, according to Roll Call, which also sponsors the game.

And because the shooter's political views drove him to commit a insane and violent act, all Washington is on edge as Scalise fights for his life.

DAVIS: You know, Scalise is a very popular member of the House Republican Conference.

Nonetheless, said Sava, "we fully expect him to be able to walk" and "hopefully run".

Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner also remains at the MedStar Washington hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to her ankle, but is in "good condition and good spirits" the hospital said. But a congressional aide-turned-lobbyist, Matt Mika, was shot multiple times and critically injured, and he remained hospitalized.

The congressional baseball match pits Republicans against Democrats. "The bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding", a hospital statement said.

About 20,000 people turned out for Thursday night's game, raising more than $1 million for the Washington Literacy Center, The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington, the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation and The Capitol Police Memorial Fund. "It can not be rationalized, and so I would hope that you would pray for our country, as well", Edwards said.

Once a relatively cozy affair, played at a minor league ballpark in Maryland, the game has gone big time in recent years and has been played at Nationals Park, just a few blocks from the Capitol.

Before they took the field, Democrats and Republicans gathered in prayer around second base as fans chanted "USA, USA".

Thursday's match-up represents a tie-breaker in the series.

"I'll miss the banter with him back and forth", Richmond said of the heckling they usually exchange from opposing dugouts.
