UK court rehears Charlie Gard case in light of new evidence

Case of critically-ill baby back in court

While he agreed that a 10 percent chance of survival was significant, Francis said that evidence must be supplied before Thursday's hearing which could decide Charlie's fate.

"If you bring new evidence to me and I consider that evidence changes the situation ..."

So I find myself ready to argue that these outsiders, the doctors and lawyers, should butt out.

A British court on Monday began re-examining the case of a terminally ill baby whose life support is due to be withdrawn at a London hospital, after Pope Francis and U.S. President Donald Trump intervened in the case.

They nevertheless called for a new hearing before the British High Court of Justice, deeming it necessary to take into account the "new elements for experimental treatment" proposed by "two global hospitals".

Barrister Grant Armstrong, who led Charlie's parents' legal team, told the judge that hospitals in the United States and Italy had offered treatment. They said he was diagnosed with mitochondrial depletion syndrome when he was 9 months old.

Nucleoside bypass therapy is administered via oral medication and has saved the lives of two children who suffer from a similar form of the mitochondrial disease that Gard is fighting. His parents want to take him to the United States for experimental therapy, which they say offers their son a chance of improvement.

On Friday, however, GOSH said it had applied for a new court hearing "in light of claims of new evidence relating to potential treatment for his condition".

The hospital requested a review of the justice after the publication of a letter from the Bambino Gesu Hospital in the Vatican, which presented its research and recommended that the Great Ormond Street Hospital "reconsider" its position.

BBC Radio 4 early Monday that her son still has a chance of surviving thanks to the intervention of Trump and the pontiff, who turned their fight "into an global issue". Asked about the impact of their support, Yates said: "It's saved his life so far".

A White House official later stated that members of the Trump administration, but not the president, had spoken to the parents in calls facilitated by the British government. "He could be my child, or your child, or any one of us", said Foster.

Newly proposed legislation from two Republican members of Congress would grant lawful permanent status in the United States to Charlie Gard and his family, Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) wrote in an op-ed published by Fox News on Tuesday.

The couple handed a 350,000-signature petition to GOSH on Sunday, signed by people around the world.
