Let me speak or I will quit, says Mayawati walking out of Rajya Sabha

Monsoon Session Opposition gears up for five pronged attack on Govt

Meanwhile, the BJP today slammed BSP supremo's resignation from the Rajya Sabha, calling the move a "drama" aimed at "creating confusion" by raising an emotional pitch. "I have dedicated my life for the uplift of the poor, Dalits, tribes, backwards, Muslims, and other minorities groups". Given that her party has just 19 MLAs in the 403 member-strong assembly, the Dalit leader is unlikely to get any seat in the biennial polls in April.

BSP chief Mayawati on Tuesday walked out of the Rajya Sabha saying she would resign if she was not allowed to speak.

The facts make it clear that she was using it as a convenient political ploy, even a desperate attempt to regain at least a fraction of her lost glory as a leader.

"She is trying to find a niche for herself for 2019 (general elections)", said Dr Aftab Alam, associate professor of political science of Aligarh Muslim University. "We support Mayawati ji and if she wants we will again send her to Rajya Sabha", he said to the media.

After threatening to quit, the president of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Mayawati on Tuesday resigned as the Rajya Sabha MP.

"This is the reason I have made a decision to quit from the Rajya Sabha". Her party does not have the strength in Uttar Pradesh Assembly to re-elect her to the Upper House. She alleged that she had tried to visit Saharanpur to reach out to Dalit families, but her efforts were foiled. In fact, it comes across as a calculated strategy towards reviving the fortune of her party. By resigning now, she can tell them that by doing so she upheld their pride and Parliament was not a fit place for her. Siddiqui, however, retorted that she was selling seats for money, a charge raised against her by many people who left her fold in the immediate past. She may have this great urge to go in a blaze of glory.

The BSP leader further said if she was not allowed to speak about the troubles faced by the weaker sections of society, she should not be in Parliament.
