2018 Ford F-150 Police Responder

It's called the Ford F-150 Police Responder, and it's the first pursuit-rated pickup truck. The 375hp and 470 lb-ft of torque are slightly higher than Interceptor SUV ratings - Ford has offered more power from the same engines in its trucks for years as the pickups have drivetrains capable of handling more engine output.

It will hit the market this fall, along with Ford's newest models of law enforcement vehicles.

Although you won't see it any time soon in Australia, where the latest F-150 is available from a handful right-hand drive converters, the F-150 Police Responder joins the Blue Oval's growing law enforcement vehicle range in North America, which Ford claims is the biggest in the United States industry. It also has a top speed of 100 miles per hour, a front stabilizer bar for improved handling police-calibrated brake calipers and pads for speedy responses. It will be able to hold its own over any terrain thanks to underbody skid plates and 18-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires. Rated at a healthy 375 horsepower, that gas-guzzling heart is mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission for smooth and rapid acceleration.

A standard class IV hitch gives F-150 Police Responder best-in-class towing capability of 3.2 tonnes. The basics are a column shifter, heavy-duty cloth for the front seats - along with slim bolsters and anti-stab plates - and vinyl for the rear seats. It will reach a top speed of 100 miles per hour and has towing capacity of 7,000 pounds and 132 cubic feet of interior space - more than any other police vehicle. The floors are heavy-duty vinyl too, for easy cleaning.

Recently, some police departments have pulled Ford Explorer-based police vehicles from service because of concerns over carbon monoxide leaks.

The long arm of the law just got a little longer with the go-anywhere Ford F-150 Police Responder.

Ford's 2018 F-150 Police Responder will join sheriff's offices, border patrol, and state and local agencies this spring.
