Trump appears to advocate rough police treatment of suspects

White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci walks down the steps of Air Force One after arriving at Long Island Mac Arthur Airport in Ronkonkoma N.Y. Friday

President Trump spoke to a group of police officers on Long Island, New York, Friday, sparking controversy for his encouragement of physically aggressive policing tactics.

He described the precautions typically taken by police where they place a hand over a suspect's head while they're being put into a police vehicle to protect them.

"When you guys put somebody in the auto and you're protecting their head, you know, the way you put their hand over?"

Hours after the commander in chief seemed to endorse police brutality during a speech at a Long Island community college by calling on cops to be a little less nice to suspects, the police department begged to disagree.

Chuck Wexler, executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum, said of Trump's comments, "It just - it's the wrong message". "Totally protect the criminal, not the officers". Those constraints, however, have been lifted by the Trump administration; the president endeavored to rally the troops: "And I want to just tell you all together, right now, the reason I came - this is the most important sentence to me: On behalf of the American people, I want to say, thank you". These laws are stacked against you.

"Look", Commissioner Sini said, "we have specific grant" applications to the federal government pending that could "address the gang issue". However, the truth of the matter is that when a police officer puts on their uniform, they are not like every other human anymore. "You could take the hand away". Attorney General Jeff Sessions has pushed for a crackdown on MS-13, which has led to hundreds of arrests in Suffolk County. "We're going to support you like you've never been supported before".

"Despite the pageantry of a presidential visit, our local officials must renew their commitment to our immigrant community, who they serve, rather than acting as an instrument of Trump's deportation agenda", she said.

However, he singled out one Republican official - the only one of the many he recognized from the dais who was not actually in the room.

"I know some cops who can't do their jobs because they have a pathetic mayor", said President Trump, to laughs and applause.

All but a few of those charged in the deaths were citizens of El Salvador or Honduras who entered the US illegally, according to law enforcement officials.

In a tweet after President Trump's appearance, the Suffolk County Police Department's Twitter account stated, "The SCPD has strict rules and procedures relating to the handling of prisoners".
