Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart says the crash was reported Sunday afternoon on Pico Boulevard.

The fire department said that one 44-year-old man was in a critical condition while a 30-year-old man, 18-year-old woman and 28-year-old woman were all in a serious condition.

He said several victims were pinned under the van as panicked witnesses rush to pull them out. Four other victims are reportedly in a stable condition hospital. At least six people were injured.

Video footage from a news helicopter showed the white van on the sidewalk in front of The Fish Spot restaurant. The impact of the crash sent the Ford van through a picket fence outside the restaurant, then through tables packed with diners on the patio.

The driver of the van, who police said caused the collision when he blew through a red light, was arrested after allegedly attempting to flee on foot, Los Angeles police Sgt. C. Barlow said.

Terrorism is apparently not being considered as motive and both drivers had stayed to cooperate with police.

The driver came out of the van and appeared disoriented, Crump said.
