BREAKING: One dead after school collapses: Several trapped in wreckage as fire breaks out

Minneapolis school explosion levels building

Minnehaha, a private Christian school that opened in 1913, enrolls about 825 students.

As school workers, students and neighbors gathered by the tennis courts in the northwest corner of campus, some Taher employees waited with tears in their eyes to learn the fate of co-workers.

Three other victims are in satisfactory condition, and five were discharged from the hospital.

- The school says Carlson was Minnehaha's "biggest cheerleader".

Less than 10 hours after an explosion and collapse happened at Minnehaha Academy's Upper School, it was standing room only inside the academy's chapel on its south campus.

Carlson had always been a part of the Academy, graduating in 1953 and sending his children to the school before going back himself to work as a custodian, he told the school's media website, Redhawks Online previous year.

Those at the scene said the explosion was "massive".

Firefighters have said their recovery efforts are done.

The explosion was possibly caused by a natural gas explosion.

Principal of the Upper School at Minnehaha Academy Jason Wenschlag tweeted: "Please pray for Minnehaha".

"The NTSB investigates pipeline incidents and accidents", agency spokesman Christopher O'Neil told AFP. Assistant Fire Chief Bryan Tyner said the injured were all adults, either school employees or contractors. Ryan Larsen, a company official, released a statement saying the company was monitoring the situation and referred all questions to the Minneapolis Fire Department.

Medics said three people were in a critical condition, four in a serious condition and two had "minor trauma". The department says people are trapped in the rubble. Some students in the academy's summer program were on campus at the time of the explosion, but none of them were hurt.

The blast, fire and collapse Wednesday morning occurred in the upper school.

In a separate post about Ruth, the school said: 'Ruth worked for Minnehaha Academy for 17 years.

A Minnesota school receptionist has been killed in an explosion that partially levelled the building and injured nine others, officials say.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribute reported that "Eagan-based Master Mechanical Inc. was issued a permit on June 7 for "gas piping and hooking up meter" at the address".

The blast Wednesday shook the building and started a fire.

The school confirmed two administrative staff members were killed. Fruetel said the medical examiner's office was working to notify relatives.

He was not sure if the two missing people are contractors or school staff. At a news conference Wednesday night, Fruetel did not specify whether Carlson's body was the one located.

The fire chief says the exact cause of the explosion remains unclear. The state fire marshal will likely take the lead, he says, but Minneapolis fire and other agencies may be involved.
