Solar eclipse 101: This is why the sun disappears
04 August 2017, 12:08 | Nichole Osborne
Library to host solar eclipse programs
The 2017 eclipse in either total or partial phase can be seen by over 500 million people in North and South America, Europe, and Africa. Boy, you are so wrong. It ignores two other factors that shorten the visibility time of total solar eclipses: the increase in the sun's size due to changes in its interior structure and the gradual change in the shape of the moon's orbit.
However, a partial solar eclipse will be visible in every US state on August 21.
Why do you need special glasses?
The only safe ways to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters - such as "eclipse glasses" - or hand-held solar viewers. Totality begins at 1:14 p.m. WyomingThe centerline of the total eclipse will pass over the southern part of Grand Teton National Park in the Jackson Hole valley, making it one of the best places in the country to experience the astronomical event.
If you can't find any freebies, various eclipse eyewear options - from simple cardboard-framed filters costing only a few dollars to expensive eclipse-safe binoculars and cameras - can be purchased from drugstores, grocery stores, and online retailers.
- Never use homemade filters - such as potato chip bags, smoked glass, exposed film, DVDs or "space blankets" - and don't try viewing through any ordinary sunglasses. The following list are those states along its path and thus, most directly impacted: Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and SC.
NASA states that the American Astronomical Society has verified five manufacturers of eclipse glasses and solar viewers that meet the ISO 12312-2 global standard for such products: American Paper Optics, Baader Planetarium (AstroSolar Silver/Gold film only), Rainbow Symphony, Thousand Oaks Optical, and TSE 17. The moon's shadow falls on the earth's surface.
The planetarium has stocked thousands of eclipse glasses, available in the gift shop for one dollar each.
Hotels along the path of totality have been booked solid for a year, and Stark said to expect heavy traffic to and from the totality path, which stretches from OR to SC.
This line-up occurs once every 12 to 18 months. San Francisco will experience a partial eclipse at 10:15 a.m. PDT and will be able to see 75 percent of the sun blocked.
