Pebble Beach 2017: BMW brings new Z4, M8 to the concept lawn

BMW Z4 Concept 830x553

This BMW Z4 Concept, unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in the United States, precedes the replacement to BMW's popular two-seat roadster by a matter of months.

Like in the classic Z vehicle tradition of BMW, the new Z4 will be a strict two-seater with probably better levels of cargo-carrying ability.

The fact that the new Z4 and Supra share a common root does raise the prospect of a hybrid powertrain option too, and BMW could make an M version of the Z4 with the 425bhp lump from the M3.

LED headlights and BMW's trademark "kidney" grilles will dominate front styling, while the bonnet gets a bulge stretching nearly its full width with side air vents. Where the clamshell bonnet ends on the wings is the start of a powerful swage line that runs up the side of the auto, through the doors, and ends at the top of the L-shaped LED rear light clusters. If sources are to be believed, BMW has planned to reveal the new Z4 in a similar fashion as their popular 8 series models.

BMW broke all our hearts a little bit in 2014 when it said that the sports auto market was dying. But the current small front fender side vents are supplanted by dramatic, forward-raked side openings (BMW dubs them the Air Breathers) that seem to evoke, more than anything, a Corvette.

The long bonnet, meanwhile, retains the clamshell design of previous Z4 models. Most of the dashboard on the passenger side is covered in orange suede, but in front of the driver it's finished in black leather, as is the driver's seat. As seen in the picture of the interior, the fascia design and two digital screens - one on the centre and the other behind the showy steering wheel - are production certs.

A head-up display is also included, while all in-car controls are grouped by function, contributing to the cabin's minimalist approach.

With a powerfully sculpted exterior and overall compact proportions, the BMW Concept Z4 is the Bavarian automaker's brand new take on what a roadster should look like.

What is the inspiration behind the Concept Z4?

BMW says the laid-back profile remains but with a shorter snout this time for increased driving agility -something sorely missing in today's preceding model. The second engine powers the Z4 M40i and is the latest incarnation of BMW's B58 turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine.

The new Z4 should be more spacious than its predecessor (even though it's still a two-seater) because it's wider and the front and rear axles are set farther apart. Our recommended Sport trim gets you sports seats and bespoke alloy wheels - and the 220d engine we recommend is punchy yet reasonably economical.
