Maybe It's A Grower? Taylor Swift Drops “Look What You Made Me Do”
Featuring lines such as "I don't like your little games, I don't like your tilted stage" and "I don't trust nobody and nobody trusts me", it was clear that Swift was addressing the issue that had resulted in a media frenzy and her year of silence.
Look What You Made Me Do, which appears to defiantly address the feuds and drama that have surrounded Swift's life in recent years, has divided opinion. Swift noted that Kanye didn't include the "bitch" part of his lyrics, but for the most part, the internet didn't care.
The twitter reaction was fast and furious, with fans expressing delight at her return, combined with shock over her new-found "vindictive" side, as Cosmpolitan put it.
This could be a reference to her feud with Katy Perry. Everyone remembers what happened between them at the VMA's.
Kanye also took aim at Taylor on his track "Famous" a year ago, in which he referred to the singer as a "b***h*" and joked about sleeping with her. I don't disagree, nor would any women. "Look What You Made Me Do" is, in part, created to get attention and it has succeeded. She has long, sharp talons with snake jewelry slithering up her fingers, as she embodies a film noir character ready for revenge. As she's stated in the past, "There's nothing I do better than revenge". Though she's had her moments, it's important for us to remember that celebrities and artists are still human. The old Taylor, the sweet, make-nice Taylor, for all intents and purposes, is indeed dead in "Look".
Whether it will be successful in salvaging her Reputation, however, is unclear. Fans tweeted about their excitement in anticipation of the song release at midnight. They believe that she is reclaiming the narrative once again.
One source said: "The single is very different". She's a polarizing figure in the same vein of her rival Kanye West, in that her defenders will never stray from her side and her detractors will never be won over, her every move inspiring breathless commentary.
There's also a reference to a "list of names"-on which her enemy's is underlined-that she plans to check not once, but twice (um, is that a straight-up Santa reference?)".
At one stage during the song, Swift sounds as if she's speaking through a telephone and says the line, "The old Taylor can't come to the phone right now. Why?"
Why? Oh! Because she is dead! It's flattering. When we recorded "Sexy" I didn't think it would last more than six months. I want to enjoy it because it sends the message that if, for whatever reason, you feel knocked down by something, you can use that as motivation to come back and be stronger than ever. I am however loving her new dark look.
