Here's how it went down. a guy literally sprinted past fire crews Saturday night that were stationed around one of the giant burning man structures in Nevada, leaving him engulfed in flames.

Mitchell died hours later at the UC Davis hospital burn centre in California.

Shocking pictures show firefighters rushing after the man into the flaming structure, but were forced to abandon their efforts when conditions became too risky.

Organizers are also offering emotional support counselling at the art and music celebration in the Black Rock Desert.

Mitchell was a USA citizen who had a home in Oklahoma but apparently was living in Switzerland with his wife, the sheriff's office said.

'Black Rock City fire personnel rescued him from the fire.

Over 70,000 people are attending the 26th installment of the festival in Northern Nevada.

The AP notes that "Attendees have tried to run into the flames [before] as a symbol of rebirth".

On Saturday evening around 10:30PM, an attendee of Burning Man slipped through safety perimeters and leapt into a fire.

SHOCKING photographs have captured the moment when a man ran straight into white-hot flames at a festival.

Burning Man ends Monday.

There have been injuries reported before but Allen said this is the first fatality he's aware of in his 15 years with the county.

That's because the free-wheeling, don't-call-us-a-festival dedicated to radical self-expression and reliance in the middle of nowhere is nearly 4,000 feet above sea level.

Burning Man's organizers set up an official livestream, which has broadcast the playa since August 30.
