Frankfurt Motor Show 2017 – Five to look out for
The automaker said on Monday it was stepping up the pace on its electric vehicle program, announcing more than 20 billion euros ($23.86 billion) of new investments over the next 12 years.
That means that by 2030 the company plans to offer an electric or hybrid version of over 300 different vehicle models.
Daimler said Monday that its luxury brand Mercedes-Benz planned to offer an electric motor in all its models before the end of 2022, although it cautioned that the shift to electric cars that are lower margin required additional cost savings.
Volkswagen has unveiled the latest concept of its all-electric ID Crozz sport utility vehicle as the company set a target of offering 80 battery-powered models across its group by 2025.
Perhaps mindful of the emissions scandal of 2015, Matthias Müller, chairman of Volkswagen's board of management said: "We have got the message and we will deliver".
According to Mueller, the automotive industry is undergoing an irreversible process of transformation.
The world is shifting toward electric vehicles, but it's proving to be a gradual process. Together with the electric vehicles, the Volkswagen would also need to upgrade the charging infrastructure and battery technology as well.
Volkswagen further claims that the power will be somewhere within the 300 horsepower range and that the I.D. Crozz will have a top speed of 112 miles per hour.
With governments planning to phase out sales of gas and diesel engines, electric cars were also a big focus throughout the show.
It's a decision that forms part of a much larger trend pushed both by governments as they look to reduce the air pollution in cities, and auto companies that realise customers are looking for cleaner, more efficient vehicles. Crozz concept at Frankfurt and confirmed the all-electric crossover will go into production in 2020 as part of its Strategy 2025 EV roll-out.
Around $20 billion will be spent on developing electric vehicles which is double the budget originally proposed by VW earlier this year.
Even Porsche, part of Volkswagen, didn't wait for the show but showed off its new Cayenne SUV on August 29 with an elaborate streamed event from its base in Stuttgart, Germany. He added that VW is setting the scene for a final breakthrough in e-mobility.
