Rift in family over Sharif's successor as brother, nephew distance themselves

Justice has been served: Imran on SC verdict

In her absence, her daughter Maryam Nawaz led the campaign for the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party.

The wife of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Sunday won a by-election for her husband's seat, in a vote viewed as a referendum on a Supreme Court decision that forced Sharif to step down over a corruption scandal.

Her mother is under treatment in the United Kingdom for throat cancer.

Railway Minister Khawaja Saad Rafiq said the people of Pakistan had rejected Sharif's disqualification by the Supreme Court by electing his wife.

According to the unofficial results, Kulsoom Nawaz secured 61,745 votes while her rival, Yasmeen Rashid of the opposition Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) or Justice Movement bagged 47099 votes, an election official said at a news conference Monday morning.

"By announcing Khaqan Abbasi first as the country's interim PM and then permanent, Nawaz Sharif has successfully denied control of PML-N to his younger brother till next election in mid-2018", said analyst Nusrat Javed.

It may be mentioned here that PTI could win just one by-election for national assembly seat after the 2013 general elections, and in which Jehangir Khan Tareen defeated PML-N's Candidate.

On Sunday night, after winning the battle of NA-120, she addressed the workers in an emotional cum enthusiastic manner criticising her political opponents while PML-N workers chanted slogans of "I Love You Nawaz Sharif".

Earlier in the day, long queues were seen outside the polling stations as people came out to cast their vote as early as 8am.

Maryam defended her father in an interview with a private television and said that Dawn Leaks report should be made public and that it was a non-issue. The Sharif family and Dar will now face corruption cases filed by the National Accountability Bureau in the accountability court.

Sheikh Yaqoob, a candidate from the Milli Muslim League, a new political party backed by Hafiz Saeed-led Jamaat-ut-Dawa (JuD), is also standing.
