Taron Egerton likes hanging out with his 'Kingsman The Golden Circle' co-star Colin Firth

Kingsman The Golden Circle Taron Egerton Colin Firth

Matthew Vaughn's latest, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, smashes its way into theaters this weekend. Kingsman: The Golden Circle, a followup to the 2015 action comedy based on Mark Miller and Dave Gibbons's graphic novel, comes to theatres September 22, 2017. There's lots of CGI, more stars and extreme character makeovers, and an expanded running time to accommodate all of it. We meet him leaving his Savile Row headquarters in the heart of London's fashionable Mayfair where he pursued by Edward Holcroft's rogue, one-armed former member Charlie, who seemingly bears more than a grudge against our dashing lead character. Overall, this "Kingsman" provides more guilt than pleasure. Taron Egerton has truly adopted Eggsy's suave and stylish persona; his role this time around calls for a more personal character arc, as Eggsy is forced to balance world-saving responsibilities with a social life that includes a recent marriage. Laser lassos, spinning snow lifts, killer robot dogs, machine-gun briefcases, exploding baseballs ... some of the ideas featured here seem like they were taken from Q's rejected Bond inventions pile, but they fit perfectly into The Golden Circle's heightened sense of over-the-top mayhem. In fact, he's fully domesticated. Kingsman is an ensemble and Eggsy works best with a partner like Harry.

Eggsy's cultural dislocation is still a feature of The Golden Circle, but it's taken a new form. Soon, Eggsy and Merlin (a returning Mark Strong) find themselves looking for answers and find them, as luck would have it, in a bottle of Kentucky bourbon. Bourbon versus single malt, literally and metaphorically.

New to the franchise are Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, Channing Tatum and Jeff Bridges.

Julianne Moore is great fun as Poppy, a drug kingpin - Vaughn describes her as "Martha Stewart on crack" - holed up in an Americana-styled lair in the Cambodian jungle. Here she's like a crazed June Cleaver, wearing an apron while operating an worldwide drug cartel from a Cambodian religious shrine redecorated with '50s themes - not based on the actual '50s, but on her understanding of the era as seen though 1970s TV. Agent Tequila does not seem impressed by their fine suits or fancy specs, though, saying, "Let me see if I got it right here". Either way, Goldman and Vaughn are playing mind games with us.

Directed by Matthew Vaughn. This, in turn, forces Eggsy and Merlin (Mark Strong) to travel overseas and find allies in the form of Kingsman's American counterpart, Statesman, whose cover is a Kentucky bourbon distillery headed by characters with names like Champagne (Jeff Bridges), Tequila (Channing Tatum), Whiskey (Pedro Pascal), and Merlin's opposite number Ginger (Halle Berry). Distributed by 20th Century Fox.
