Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah to address BJP National Executive today, economy on agenda

BJP National Executive meet begins in Delhi

The BJP, he said, has become central to people's hopes and ambitions as he asked party's leaders to become a link between people's problems and government.

Usually, the National Executive members alone attend the meeting but this time the BJP is holding an extended meeting, with invites going to all elected representatives of the party. No one will be spared.

The slowdown in economic growth and job creation, a stimulus package to re-energise the economy and the next round of assembly polls are expected to dominate the Bharatiya Janata Party national executive meeting in New Delhi today, which will be addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party President Amit Shah, with political and economic resolutions to be its highlights. "The Prime Minister said that contesting election is just one of the several responsibilities of a political party and we should use this opportunity to ensure that democracy goes beyond the elections". However, the real agenda was to get a confirmation on the process of his joining the BJP, sources said. The national executive on Monday thanked the Prime Minister and finance minister Arun Jaitley for accomplishing two "great achievements" of demonetisation and implementing GST. The party also supported government's stand on the Rohingya issue.

"The fact is that the BJP is only an instrument of electoral math and those electoral dividends are reaped by polarising the society. We should take BJP beyond elections and make it a instrument of mass participation to improve quality of life of the people".

To mark the birth centenary celebrations of Upadhyaya, the party has also dedicated the year to the "welfare of the poor" and the government has taken various initiatives on this front while curbing corruption, Yadav said.

The resolution claimed the government had "delivered" on its promise on corruption and black money, adding that demonetisation, a move which invited sharp criticism from opposition, "broke the backbone of black market as well as the black money hoarders". "Now they do not know how to behave as opposition", Modi told the meeting, according to Jaitley. "Harsh language can't be a substitute for substantive charges".

Praising the work of his own government after coming to power in May 2014, the PM said: "Policies taken in power sector made ease of doing business".
