Eman Ahmed 37 with Dr Shamsheer Vayalil during her birthday celebrations at Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi

According to a team of doctors monitoring her condition, numerous co-morbid conditions including heart diseases and kidney dysfunction resulted in her death. "Her bedsores are nearly healed, and because her voice has cleared, she is able to speak in full sentences and is communicating better with her surroundings", Dr Yassin Al Shahat, chief medical officer at Burjeel Hospital Abu Dhabi, said at the time.

The doctors in Mumbai were able to help her lose almost 700 pounds through bariatric weight loss surgery before she was flown to Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi for further rehabilitation. She underwent weight loss surgery in Mumbai and later shifted to Abu Dhabi for treatment.

On September 9, Eman celebrated her 37th birthday.

Her family said that before her surgery she had not left her home for 25 years.

Before travelling to India for surgery in March, she weighed some 500 kilograms. When she left Mumbai her weight was close to 300kg lighter after the treatment.

Eman was supposed to stay in the hospital for physiotherapy to help her get used of the limbs that have been basically dormant for years.

Ms Ahmed's sister had alleged that her treatment in Mumbai had been far short of satisfactory and the family had been misled. Also, she weighs 5 kg at the time of her birth according to her parents. They say she had been heavy from the moment she was born, and she lost the ability to walk when she was just 11. She was undergoing treatment at the Saifee Hospital in Mumbai where she underwent treatment for severe obesity. But her sister Shaimaa Selim released a video which stated that Ahmed was not doing so well.

Eman Ahmed had been in Abu Dhabi since May.

Doctors believe a thyroid condition and a rare gene defect caused Abd El Aty's extreme weight gain, which eventually rendered her immobile.
