USA shooting suspect charged with murder

Previous story: One person was killed and seven others are wounded after a shooting at an Antioch church Sunday.

Update 4:25 p.m.: Nashville police officers have identified the shooter as 25-year-old Emanuel Kidega Samson. Other charges are coming later, police said. His first court appearance has been scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Church members praised an usher who confronted the gunman in a deadly shooting at a Tennessee church.

"After the gunman suffered the self-inflicted wound, the church usher... ran to his auto, got his gun, came back in, and made sure the gunman didn't make any more movements until the police officers arrived", Aaron told journalists.

The masked gunman was arrested.

"This guy came and fighting with him and tackle him down", Minerva Rosa said.

Police tweeted Sunday night that 25-year-old Emanuel Samson will face "multiple additional charges".

About 50 people were in the church during the shooting, Metropolitan Nashville Police spokesman Don Aaron told reporters.

Aaron said the suspect - wearing a half mask - fatally shot a woman who was walking to her vehicle, then entered the rear of the church, and shot six people. As soon as he got out of his auto he fatally shot a woman who was walking to her vehicle.

Six persons in the church were wounded by gunfire. Two of the victims are said to be in critical condition. It would not release the name.

Burnette Chapel Church of Christ is just over the Rutherford County line from La Vergne. After Samson was shot in the struggle, Engle's father stood guard over him while Engle went to get his firearm from his vehicle.

"The wound sent Samson to the floor". When he returned, Engle put his gun on Samson and held him down with his foot, Ramey said.

Police have released the identity of a suspect in a Tennessee church shooting. "He was the hero today".

Nashville police say a suspect in a church shooting apparently shot himself.

"He's the hero", Anderson said.

All of the victims but the deceased Smith are over the age of 60, and most have been transported to and treated at the Vanderbilt Medical Center.

Ramey said Engle told him he sprang into action after hearing gunshots inside and outside the church. "Without him I think it could be worse".

He asked for prayers for the victims and their families, adding, "Please pray for the shooter, the shooter's family and friends. They are hurting as well". Police say Engle used his gun to make sure the suspect didn't try to make a move before help arrived. "If you are unable to attend, please join us in spirit".

The church is in Antioch, a working-class neighborhood and one of Nashville's most diverse.
