Saudi King issues order allowing women to drive

Saudi King Salman has ordered that women be allowed to drive cars, state media said, ending the conservative Islamic kingdom's status as the only country where that is forbidden.

Saudi Arabia has threatened other countries over a proposed resolution at the U.N.'s leading human rights body that would send worldwide, independent investigators into war-torn Yemen.

"We are implementing our Vision2030 initiative through which we are empowering women and youth to play a greater role in the Saudi economy and take better advantage of the increasing opportunities that result from the Kingdom's modernization and economic reform initiatives".

"But some working Saudi women say that hiring private drivers to get them to and from work eats up much of their pay, diminishing the incentive to work", the report stated.

In recent years, many women have come to rely on ride-sharing apps like Uber and Careem to gain some freedom of movement. A committee will be set up to study how enforce the regulations.

Manal al-Sharif, a Saudi women's rights advocate who filmed herself driving in 2011 and posted the footage to YouTube to protest the law, celebrated the announcement on Tuesday.

Women's rights activists since the 1990s have been pushing for the right to drive, saying it represents their larger struggle for equal rights under the law. Women there are forbidden to wear clothes or make-up that "show off their beauty", must limit the amount of time they spend with men who aren't family members and are not allowed to use public swimming pools.

The new rule will not take effect immediately.
