TV Ratings: Sunday Night Football Down in Week 3

President's criticisms spark more protests at NFL games

The network's airing of the national anthem before the game between the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals comes amid a prominent protest movement of kneeling during the anthem, which saw more than 200 players participate on Sunday.

Over the weekend, Trump said owners should fire players who protested. When questioned about National Football League players taking a knee during Sunday night's game, 47 percent did not support it. Valley native and Raiders Quarterback Derek Carr says there is no easy way to talk about the statements being made on the field. Percentages might have been down for a couple weeks, but the National Football League had set such a high bar that it was a prisoner of its own success when comparing ratings to previous years.

In fact, more people have been tuning in. The network's regional football coverage at 1 p.m. was up 11 percent, though its afternoon national game coverage was basically flat.

On Monday, the president tweeted the hashtag #StandForOurAnthem and saying the "issue of kneeling has nothing to do with race".

The mixed results could be a sign that competitive match-ups rather than political controversy had a larger impact on whether people tune in.

This game should be a fun one no matter what happens, as we'll either see a close battle between two talented NFC teams, or we'll see the Cowboys get back to their high-powered offense after a down week in Denver last Sunday.

Conservatives are celebrating the overnight ratings decline of NBC's Sunday Night Football, but a look inside the numbers reveals that ratings were down because the game was lopsided, and not related to the anthem protest. They're likely to be up overall for the week after Monday night's game, he said. Some NFL players also locked arms or held up fists in solidarity.

"They're disrespecting the flag by not standing", Fuller said. "That's part of what makes America great". The NFL is trying to send a message, and it's hoping President Trump will see it.
