Rubio urges Trump to put Pentagon in charge of recovery in Puerto Rico

Flooding in Catano Puerto Rico

And that's exactly what the commander in chief did early Saturday morning, hours after the mayor of the island's capital city, San Juan demanded more help from the federal government.

In his tweets Saturday, Trump praised the military and first responders for "an wonderful job".

Many have made impassioned responses to President Donald Trump's tweets in which he criticized the leadership in hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico and implied its people are passing the buck on the us territory's recovery.

"They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort", Trump continued.

The White House announced Thursday that President Donald Trump will temporarily lift the Jones Act in order to bolster aid efforts in Puerto Rico, which was devastated by Hurricane Maria last week.

"I am begging you to take charge and save lives".

In an interview Saturday with MSNBC, Puerto Rico's Secretary of State Luis Rivera Marín was thankful for the federal government's support and said he saw progress.

But in many cases, "on site" meant stored on pallets and in containers in sea - and at airports far from the towns where Puerto Ricans desperately lined up for fresh water and pre-made meals being distributed by federal officials.

FEMA said this week that Puerto Rico has received 4.4 million meal kits, 6.5 million liters of water. "This is a 'people are dying" story.

On Friday, Carmen Yulin Cruz told a news conference she was "done being politically correct" because her people were dying in the aftermath of Maria, the most powerful storm to hit Puerto Rico in almost 90 years.

President Donald Trump is lashing out at the mayor of Puerto Rico's capital city in a war of words over recovery efforts after Hurricane Maria smashed into the USA territory.

Puerto Rico, home to more than 3 million US citizens, has had limited food, bottled water and medical supplies since Hurricane Maria struck nine days ago. "Puerto Rico was totally destroyed", he wrote at 7:33 am.

During his tweet attacks this morning, Trump called NBC and CNN "fake news" for reporting Cruz's cries for more aid.

"If we don't get the food and the water into people's hands what we are going to see is something close to a genocide", she said.

Miranda responded in another tweet: "She has been working 24/7".

"We have done an incredible job, considering there's absolutely nothing to work with", Trump said, adding that "the power grid is gone".
