'Sonic the Hedgehog' film moves over to Paramount

The studio has acquired movie rights to the popular SEGA video game franchise, with plans to bring Sonic to the silver screen for the very first time.

While Sony Entertainment put the film into turnaround recently, most of the team that was developing it are still on board including Moritz and Tim Miller as executive producer and Jeff Fowler making his feature directorial debut.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Sonic movie "will blend live action and CGI animation" (think Space Jam). Toby Ascher will also serve as an executive producer. I'm assuming there will be more plot to the actual movie than simply Sonic speeding around cities collecting coins, though I don't have particularly high expectations for the live-action film other than an incomprehensible need for Sonic to utter his catchphrase, "Gotta go fast!"

Are you a fan of the Sonic game series?

Now, let's set aside for a moment the usual concerns that video game movies are, frankly, quite often not any good at all. There's a lot of goodwill towards Miller too, whose Deadpool remains one of the funniest takedowns of the superhero genre out there. Later games in the franchise added a little more story and mythology to Sonic's background, as well as additional characters like Knuckles and Shadow.

The character's first title Sonic the Hedgehog was released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis. Here is hoping November's Sonic Forces is just as good.
