The founder of the "Weinstein Company" was terminated on Sunday as the co-chairman of the company after sexual harassment allegations came to light in a leading US daily, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Harvey Weinstein, who co-founded The Harvey Weinstein Company, has been forced out by his board of directors in the wake of a sexual harassment scandal brought to light by the New York Times exposé published on Thursday.

Bloom, who says she has known Weinstein for about a year since her book Suspicion Nation was optioned for a film, defended him last week in an interview with Good Morning America.

Following the allegations, Weinstein did issue a statement which began: "I came of age in the 60's and 70's, when all the rules about behaviour and workplaces were different". That was the culture then.

"I didn't know about these other offenses: I did not know about his financial settlements with actresses and colleagues; I did not know about his having meetings in his hotel room, his bathroom, or other inappropriate, coercive acts", Streep said.
