Panama Papers case: Nawaz's son-in-law arrested on return to Pakistan

An accountability court hearing corruption cases against former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's family granted bail to his daughter and son-in-law after they appeared in court on Monday.

Safdar, who had a non-bailable warrant against him for missing the previous summons, was arrested on his arrival. Accountability judge Muhammad Bashir granted bail to Maryam and Safdar and also exempted Sharif from Monday's hearing.

Maryam Nawaz appeared in the Islamabad court on Monday morning, while her husband who arrived in the country earlier in the day, reached the court later.

Sharif and his sons were absent during the hearing as they are still in London to attend to Kulsoom.

The court also ordered to start the process of declaring Sharif's sons - Husain and Hasan - proclaimed offender as they have failed to appear before it so far.

Pakistan's anti-corruption authorities have arrested former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's son-in- law in multiple corruption cases, officials and local media reported.

According to legal experts, in such a situation the accountability court may separate the case of the present accused or deem those absent as absconders. The court also made a decision to separate the trial of Hussain and Hassan from that of Sharif and his daughter and son-in-law.

Amid slogans by the PML-N supporters, Maryam Nawaz left the airport for the residence of PML-N leader Chaudhry Muneer, reports said.

She said that JIT levelled false allegations and there was no substance in them.

"We are not among those who worry about arrests", the Dawn quoted Maryam, as saying.

Maryam Sharif, however, said that her brothers will decide whether or when to appear before the court. "When they couldn't find any evidence, they disqualified him on the Iqama (work permit) issue", she contended.

Sharif had to step down as prime minister and president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party after he was disqualified by the Supreme Court on July 28 in the Panama Papers scandal.
