NOAATropical storm Ophelia will become a hurricane by the end of this week
A slow northeast drift is expected tonight and tomorrow, followed by an acceleration toward the east-northeast or northeast.
It is now located 745 miles southwest of the Azores, but as it gains more speed by the end of the week, it could head northeast toward the south of Azores. Its top sustained winds were clocked at 90 miles per hour (150 kph) and the storm is moving to the north-northeast at 2 miles per hour (4 kph).
Hurricane Ophelia's planning on paying a visit and it's not going to be pretty. Instead, Hurricane Ophelia's track will bring it on an unusual journey: near or just southeast of the Azores Islands, to the west of Portugal and Spain, and then northward into Ireland and the U.K.by early next week. The eye of the hurricane is expected to stay offshore. This type of post-analysis occurs after every hurricane season, sometimes leading to the addition of previously unnamed storms or tweaking of tropical cyclone intensities.
There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect.
Hurricane Ophelia may make landfall in Ireland on Monday.
Forecasters say Ophelia has become the 10th hurricane of the 2017 Atlantic season, churning far out at sea and posing no immediate threat to land.
Ophelia is the 10th consecutive hurricane of the 2017 Atlantic season. September - when the season historically peaks - has been three and a half times busier than the last three decades. Only 15 known hurricanes have passed within 200 nautical miles of the Azores since 1851.
