Pair of Car Bombs Rip Mogadishu

The Somali capital Mogadishu was struck by twin vehicle bombings claimed by Al Shabab on Saturday, the first major attack in city since a lorry bombing two weeks ago that left more than 350 dead.

Security forces cordoned off the area.

The others hurled grenades and cut off the building's electricity as night fell.

A taxi driver at the scene told AFP he saw four bodies being carried away, while another witness called Yusuf Moalim said a senior police official appeared to be among the victims, whose auto had been near the hotel entrance when the blast occurred.

The Al Qaeda-affiliated militant group is fighting to topple Somalia's internationally-backed government and has carried out scores of such attacks in Mogadishu and elsewhere in the country.

Mohamed Dek Haji said he survived the bombing as he walked beside a parked auto that was largely destroyed by the explosion.

And the Nasa-Hablod hotel was targeted just a year ago, when al-Shabaab gunmen stormed the building, killing at least 14 people and injuring another 25.

He suffered small injuries on his shoulder and skull from flying glass.

Its sister hotel, the Nasahablod, was targeted by Al Shabab in a similar attack that killed 11 people in June previous year.

"We targeted ministers and security officials who were inside the hotel".

At least two people have been killed and eight injured after Mogadishu was rocked by two bombs in quick succession, according to reports.

A suicide vehicle bomber first drove into a hotel where President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo was due to host a meeting on Saturday, following by a auto bombing near a former parliament building.

President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed has been appealing to neighbouring countries in a bid to drum up support in the fight against the Islamic extremist terror cult.

The US military also has stepped up military efforts against al Shabab this year in Somalia, carrying out almost 20 drone strikes, as the global war on extremism moves deeper into the African continent.
