"And we're confident the Mueller investigation will be revealing a lot more about Tony Podesta's lobbying practices in the near future". His decision to step down is a significant outcome of Mueller's probe, but he's drawn outsize interest on the right because he's the brother of Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta.

The partner added that the effort had been fueled partly by Mr. Podesta's aggressive efforts to defend himself against coverage by the conservative news media on the special counsel's scrutiny of the Podesta Group.

Manafort was, among other things, indicted on charges of conspiring against the United States. The Podesta Group also reported its relationship with the European Center under those disclosure rules.

The Podesta Group has repeatedly insisted that it was unaware that Manafort was using the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine to improve the image of then-Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych. Amid the "Panama Papers" leak emerged a Party of Regions ledger listing $12.7 million in cash payments for Manafort. So far in 2017, the Podesta Group has raked in nearly $16 million in lobbying fees, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Manafort allegedly enlisted the help of The Podesta Group, which did work for a group known as the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine.

In the indictment unsealed this morning, Manafort has been charged with violating FARA after failing to register as a foreign agent.

NBC News reported last week that Tony Podesta and the Podesta group had become subject of Mueller's probe into ties between the Trump presidential campaign and Russian Federation.

Politico first broke the news. The meeting ended with a resounding ovation for Podesta.

He will be handing over full operational and financial control to longtime firm CEO Kimberley Fritts.

A representative for the Podesta Group said the firm initially did not disclose its work with the ECMU to the FARA officials because the nonprofit "had certified that it was neither funded nor directed by a foreign government or political party", according to NBC News.

CNN reported back in May that the Podesta Group failed to fully disclose the extent of its work in Ukraine to U.S. authorities, though it later updated a lobbying report with the U.S. Justice Department.

"[Tony] was very magnanimous", and said, "This is an wonderful group of people", a source present at the meeting stated, according to Politico.

In a Monday email to his staff, Podesta said he was stepping down because he "needs to fight this as an individual, but doesn't want the firm to fight it", a person familiar with the farewell speech said.
