The area where the attack happened is just seven blocks from Ground Zero and is a stone's throw from City Hall
That's when Nash opened fire, shooting Saipov in the abdomen. Nash, 28, told him to drop the weapons and then fired once, striking the man. "So we all applaud and congratulate him", Cuomo said.
In Medford, Long Island, where Nash lives with his girlfriend in a Cape Cod-style house that's adorned with signs of welcome, shamrocks and the American flag, neighbors are gushing with pride and praise for the officer.
The officers ran from the school and Nash spotted the suspect, Sayfullo Saipov, 29, shouting and brandishing what turned out to be a paint-ball gun and a pellet gun.
Officer Nash, who has served in the force for five years and reportedly has more than 50 arrests under his belt, was also taken to hospital and treated for ringing in his years.
The attack left at least eight people dead and several others injured in what Mayor Bill de Blasio called a "cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians".
Nash is new to the neighborhood, and many residents didn't know he was an officer until now.
Officer Nash has two awards for excellent police duty, one for meritorious police duty from the NYPD and will soon be decorated with more.
"He seems like a nice guy, we feel safer now knowing that there's a hero in our neighborhood", said neighbor Margie Cortina. Neighbors said he moved in sometime in the past year and largely kept to himself, though he often jogged outside.
"All New Yorkers should be thankful to Ryan and his partner". They showed great courage.
- Sayfullo Saipov sped a rented truck down almost a mile of a Hudson River bike path on Tuesday afternoon, crushing eight people to death and injuring 11 more, before crashing in front of Stuyvesant High School in Tribeca.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said at the press conference, "There is no evidence at this point to suggest a wider plot, or a wider scheme".
"To NYPD Officer Ryan Nash-thank you for your bravery & quick action in stopping yesterday's terrorist attack", former NYPD commissioner William J. Bratton tweeted Wednesday.
