Putin arrives in Tehran for official visit

02 November 2017, 12:13 | Bernice Figueroa

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in the Iranian capital Tehran on Wednesday for a visit seen by the Islamic republic's leadership as a clear rejection of United States policy.

It is expected Putin will start his visit by a private talk with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. Putin's visit is also expected to involve discussions about Iran's cooperation with Russian Federation in the ongoing Syrian conflict.

"We proved to the world that we are able to resolve our region's highly important issues without (any help from) extra-regional countries", he said.

Putin, Rowhani and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said in a joint statement released after the Caspian regional heads of state met in Tehran that all parties to the agreement, which includes the U.S., "should strictly abide by their obligations", according to Russian state news agency TASS. Our cooperation can isolate the United States.

Trump last month disavowed the 2015 accord to curb Iran's nuclear program that was negotiated between Tehran and the U.S., Russia, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and China.

The Russian commander, for his part, voiced satisfaction over the current level of defense and military cooperation between Iran and Russia.

Pragmatist Iranian President Hassan Rouhani echoed Khamenei, saying Iran and Russian Federation together could tackle "regional terrorism" - an allusion to Sunni Muslim armed groups hostile to Iran, Assad and many other Arab states.

"We are managing to coordinate our positions on the Syrian issue", Putin said.

Iran's Leader also called for resistance against the (opponents') temptations and sabotage saying that bilateral ties and cooperation must be expanded in different fields in a highly motivated way.

Russian Federation has criticized Trump's disavowal of the nuclear agreement, which has opened a 60-day window for the U.S. Congress to act to reimpose economic sanctions on Iran. "It shows the determination of Tehran and Moscow to deepen their strategic alliance., which will shape the future of the Middle East", an Iranian official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

President Ilham Aliyev also for his part said while he is in Iran he feels that he is in his own home.
